This set of files contains a very large number of 32 bit patterns (ppat resources) intended for use a desktop patterns, specifically in conjunction with my Control Panel utility Desk Pattern. They are all set to automatically dither, so they work fine on any monitor, though at least 16 grays or 256 colours are generally required for them to look nice. They all require that 32 bit Quickdraw v1.2 or later (included with System 6.0.5 and later) be installed. The patterns are divided by size and style. The best tool (as of this writing) for cursory examination these patterns is ResEdit (v2.1 or later). Use ResEdit to move a few typical patterns into a file named 'Desk Patterns' in your System Folder (if you are using Desk Pattern already then this file may already exist, otherwise you can create a new, empty file with ResEdit). Then select the utility Desk Pattern in the Control Panel and scan through the new patterns. If you find a pattern style that is to your liking, try a few similar patterns and leave your favorites in the Desk Patterns file. If you can't make up your mind, feel free to simply dump all the patterns provided into the Desk Patterns file, though scanning through them all will then become an arduous task.
The patterns provided are divided into two general classes: beveled tiles and gradient squares (look at them to see the distinction). They are not very complicated, but then I am hardly an artist. I have tried to include enough variety in colour schemes to satisfy most people. The sizes are divided into 16x16, 32x32 and 4x16x16. The first two indicate actual pattern sizes in pixels, and the last indicates composites made up of four 16x16 squares each. The set labelled as 'concept tiles' are actually compositions of 16x16 tiles of various sorts. The set labelled as 'icon tiles' are some colour icons overlaid on 32x32 squares. The tile style is based on the button style now often seen in various software packages (and almost everywhere on the NeXT computers). The gradient squares are based on both the simple fill capabilities of DeskPaint™ and the background pattern used on CNN when describing military equipment in the UN-Iraq war.
